In the first part of our MIOGE Preview, we take a look at 14 non-Russian companies who will be at the show this year – who they are, what they are selling, and what they are up to in Russia.
National Iranian Oil Company and National Iranian Gas Company, Iran

Russia and Iran are heading towards a flourishing energy cooperation. Presidents Putin and Rouhani met in March 2017 and spoke of ‘a great potential for enhanced oil and gas industry cooperation’ between the two countries, and this is bearing fruit – a $1 billion deal was signed for a Russian shipbuilder to provide five offshore drilling rigs to Iran.
Russia’s presence is growing in Iran – and Iran’s presence is growing at MIOGE. The National Iranian Oil Company and the National Iranian Gas company are two large exhibitors at the exhibition this year, presenting Iran’s oil and gas potential to the Russian and global industry.

TPEC
Stand number: A211
TPEC is among the highest-profile Chinese representatives at MIOGE this year. The equipment firm is based in the north-eastern Liaoning Province, nicely placed to access Russia’s China-focused projects like the Power of Siberia pipeline and the Amur Gas Processing Plant. The product range includes top drive systems, rotary steerable drilling, soft torque controls, iron roughnecks and casing systems.
HPMM

Another Liaoning-based company, HPMM specialises in a variety of rigs – skid, truck and trailer-mounted – as well as power tongs and a sideline in oil extractors and on-site accommodation for workers.
General Electric

A year has passed since GE committed to a $1 billion investment in Russian oil and gas, and the firm has been busy. Deals in the past 12 months include an agreement with Novatek to supply the Yamal plant, gas turbine equipment for a new power plant in Ekaterinburg, and a huge agreement with Rosneft for digital technologies, vessel engineering and energy supply in Russian oil and gas fields. GE supplies the whole lot to Russian oil and gas – from offshore drilling technology to digital tools.
Parker Hannifin

American giant Parker Hannifin’s products are found on or in an implausibly wide variety of machinery around the world – fluid and gas handling, hydraulics, sealing, climate control and a fair bit more. Oil and gas is a big part of the business, and Russia is an encouraging market for the company – especially after the 2014 opening of a 90,000 unit per year filter plant.
Danish Hydrocarbon Research and Technology Centre

Russia’s wells have been pumping for decades and decades. While new greenfield sites have come on stream recently, many of the Siberian and Ural powerhouses have passed their peak – so enhancing recovery is top of the agenda for the industry.
This has brought the Danish Hydrocarbon Research and Technology Centre to MIOGE this year. Based at the Technical University of Denmark, the DHRTC develops technologies, solutions and ideas to wring every last drop out of the Danish North Sea acreages. One of the centre’s priorities is applying this knowledge to fields around the world, and Russia is next to benefit.
National Oilwell Varco

NOV need no introduction – a titan of oil and gas equipment manufacturing. So we’ll discuss the firm’s ever-expanding Russian presence instead.
The company opened a gleaming manufacturing facility in the far eastern Russian region of Kostroma in 2016 – perfect timing to ride the wave of Russia’s growing oil production, which reached record post-Soviet levels in 2016. The new plant is a vote of confidence in the Russian oil sector, putting NOV’s rig systems, wellbore technologies and completion solutions closer to the clients. Participation at MIOGE 2017 is only going to help this.
Norrexim

Swiss trading company Norrexim has looked north for most of the company’s existence. Initially focusing on the Scandinavian countries, the company has concentrated pretty mush exclusively on Russia for decades now, specialising in selling European-made oil and gas equipment to Russian clients. Among the brands and products in the Norrexim stable are Cameron ball valves, tanks and modular units from French maker CITBA, valves from LOG, pig launchers, t-bends and insulation joints from German firm RMA, and valves and control systems from Breda.
Yokogawa Electric

Yamal and Sakhalin grab the attention when it comes to Russian LNG, but this sector runs deep in Russia – to the benefit of Yokogawa Electric. The Japanese outfit has been operating in Russia since 1985, and the contracts have been coming fast and fierce recently. They include a deal to supply integrated control and safety systems for the Yamal LNG plant in 2014, and a more recent contract in December 2016 with Gazprom Neft to establish an innovation centre for automated refining control systems in St. Petersburg.
ABB

ABB was around in Russia when oil production first began – the company, under its initial name of ASEA, opened its first office in St. Petersburg in 1890. They are still there 127 years later, offering solutions that range from generators and meters to software and testing machinery. Among the recent big wins for ABB in Russia was a contract to supply propulsion equipment for 16 LNG tankers for the Yamal project. The first of these entered service in January 2016.
Saltel

Bought by Schlumberger in 2016, French firm Saltel specialises in expandable patches and steel packer technology, inserted into wells to facilitate repair, completion or operation. Saltel are newcomers to the MIOGE exhibition this year – looking to add Russia to a list of markets that already include France, Australia, the USA, Canada, Algeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Scientific Drilling

Russian oil and gas professionals need no introduction to Scientific Drilling. The equipment maker has three bases in the country – one in Moscow and two closer to the action, in Ukhta and the Khanty-Mansiysk region.
Sanctions mean the company’s full selection of shale drilling technology can’t be sold in Russia – although not all equipment for unconventional drilling is forbidden – but the visitors to MIOGE 2017 are still left with a hefty range of drilling, measurement, logging and surveying equipment.
